Schools Are Making AI Decisions. But Who Asked the Families?

Schools Are Bringing AI Into the Classroom. But Who Asked the Families?

If we’re going to hold students accountable for how they use AI, shouldn’t we first make sure we’ve taught them—and their families—what responsible use actually looks like?

Where Was the Conversation?

When I hear schools talking about AI, I notice that much of the conversation is about how students are misusing it and how that misuse is affecting the integrity of their work.

I understand the concern. I’ve experienced that frustration as an educator.

Students can take an assignment, paste it into an AI tool, and submit whatever comes back without fully understanding the material—or even fully understanding how the AI they’re using works.

But I think we’re missing something.

A lot of students haven’t been taught what AI actually is, how it works, or what they could do with it if they had an educated understanding of the power behind it.

That’s where this gets complicated for me because I experience this conversation from two sides: I’m an educator, but I’m also a parent.

As an educator, AI is already finding its way into applications teachers use. Tools such as MagicSchool, for example, can help educators with lesson planning, scaffolding, differentiation, assessment, feedback, and other parts of instructional work.

But even that comes with a risk.

For a new or inexperienced teacher—or really, any educator who hasn’t been taught how to use AI thoughtfully—these tools can potentially do more harm than good when the person using them doesn’t understand how to evaluate what they produce. A simple idea can generate an entire assignment that no one fully understands.

But hey, at least the work is done.

And isn’t that part of the same problem we’re criticizing students for?

At the same time, students have access to powerful general-purpose AI tools. They can paste an assignment into an AI system and potentially copy the response instead of doing the thinking themselves.

That’s incredibly frustrating for a teacher.

Eventually, if a student repeatedly uses AI inappropriately, the teacher may have to call home. There may be consequences for the assignment or the student’s grade, depending on the school’s policies.

And that’s when something starts bothering me.

Why does the parent conversation begin when something goes wrong?

As a parent, I find myself wondering: When did we decide AI was coming into our schools in the first place?

And if we’re going to allow it into education, why aren’t we putting equally serious safeguards, expectations, and education around it so students learn to use AI as an assistive tool rather than an easy way out?

Where was the meeting where I was asked whether I thought this was a good idea?

Where was the conversation explaining what this technology could mean for my child?

And why didn’t I hear about the class, program, or training that would teach students how to safely, ethically, and effectively use AI to support their learning?

If my son’s school introduced a new AI system tomorrow, I would want to know exactly what that AI could do.

I would want to know how it was being introduced to students, how its use would be monitored, what information it could access, what training students and teachers would receive, and what parameters teachers would establish around individual assignments.

I would also want to see evidence that there was an actual educational plan behind its introduction.

What would bother me most is finding out after the fact that decisions had been made about technology that could fundamentally change how my child learns without anyone thinking parents deserved a seat at the table.

I don’t expect parents to make every decision for a school. Educators and administrators have to make decisions every day.

But AI feels different.

We’re talking about technology that can influence how students research, write, solve problems, communicate, and think through an assignment.

If my child misuses AI, I may get a phone call. If he submits AI-generated work as his own, there may be an academic consequence. And yes—as his parent, I should be part of that conversation.

But that brings me right back to the question:

Why does my involvement begin when something goes wrong?

I don’t want the first meaningful conversation a parent has with a school about AI to happen because their child is being disciplined for using it incorrectly.

If we’re going to hold students accountable for how they use AI, then I believe schools also have a responsibility to teach them how to use it responsibly first—and families should understand what they’re being taught.

Informing Families Is Not the Same as Involving Them

This is where I think we need to be careful about what we mean when we say families have a “voice.”

There is a difference between informing a parent and involving a parent.

Recent research from Bellwether makes that distinction especially important. Its August 2026 report on parent voice and AI points to a February national survey in which 57% of parents said they had not been asked for input about school AI use, while 47% said they had never received information about their district’s AI policy.

Think about that for a minute.

We’re introducing technology that has the potential to change how students learn, write, research, communicate, receive support, and complete their work—and nearly half of the parents surveyed hadn’t even received information about their district’s AI policy.

I don’t think families need to vote on every technology decision a school makes. Schools have to make operational and instructional decisions every day, and educators need room to exercise their professional judgment.

But families deserve more than an announcement after the decision has already been made.

If you’re going to introduce software, curriculum, or an application that could significantly change the way my child learns, completes assignments, receives support, or is evaluated, then I believe that’s something I need to have some say in.

And here’s something else I want to know:

What happens if I object?

Seriously. What is the process then?

Can I ask questions? Can I see the policy? Can I understand how the technology was evaluated and why it was selected? Are there alternatives? Are there circumstances where I can opt my child out?

Or does “parent engagement” really mean:

We’ve already made the decision. We’re just letting you know.

Because those aren’t the same thing.

If We’re Introducing AI, Where Is the Rollout Plan?

Before a school introduces AI directly to students, families should know exactly what is being introduced, why it’s being introduced, and what it’s going to be allowed to do.

There should be an actual rollout plan.

I want to see student training, clear rules and guidelines, and an explanation of both the benefits and limitations of using AI. I want implementation that makes sense for students at different ages, developmental levels, and academic needs.

I also want safeguards and clear parameters around what students can access, what information can be collected or shared, and how the school plans to protect students while exposing them to technology capable of producing so much information so quickly.

We can’t introduce AI first, figure out the rules later, and then be surprised when students don’t use it the way we hoped they would.

But I Don’t Think Parents Need to Approve Every Use of AI

This is where I draw an important distinction.

I don’t believe every use of AI inside a school requires parent approval.

If a teacher uses AI behind the scenes to brainstorm discussion questions, organize ideas, draft a lesson outline, or reduce administrative work—and a qualified educator is still reviewing the output and making the actual instructional decisions—I don’t think that teacher needs my permission every time they open an AI tool.

Schools have always selected professional tools for educators, and teachers need room to exercise professional judgment.

My line starts to change when AI moves from supporting the adult to directly affecting the child.

There’s a meaningful difference between a teacher asking AI to help brainstorm an activity and an AI system analyzing my child’s writing, academic performance, attendance, behavior, or other information and then making—or influencing—a recommendation about them.

That’s where family involvement becomes much more important to me.

If AI is being used for classroom learning, assessment, grading, academic interventions, behavioral or academic monitoring, communication, student support, or decisions that could affect my child’s educational record or opportunities, I want to know.

And the closer AI gets to making judgments about a child, the stronger the expectation for transparency, human oversight, and family involvement should become.

Maybe we’ve been asking the wrong question.

Instead of simply asking:

Should parents approve AI in schools?

Maybe we need to ask:

What is the AI being allowed to do?

Those are two very different conversations.

Access to Information Is Not the Same as Understanding

This is where equity enters the conversation for me.

A school can say, “We told the parents.”

They sent the email. They posted the announcement. They uploaded the policy. Maybe they even translated it.

Technically, the information was provided.

But did every family actually understand it?

This is where disparity and inequity can begin.

Parents don’t all receive, process, or understand information in the same way. There can be language barriers, literacy differences, disabilities, limited access to technology, unfamiliarity with AI, or simply differences in how people best process new information.

That’s why I don’t think equitable family engagement can mean sending the exact same information to everyone and considering the job complete.

Equality might be giving every parent the same message. Equity means making sure every parent has a meaningful opportunity to understand it.

For multilingual families, that could mean providing information in both English and the family’s preferred language—not simply translating a complicated document and assuming the job is finished.

There could be a written version and an audio version for families who would rather listen than read. There could be a simplified or scaffolded version that breaks complicated concepts into more digestible pieces.

Students aren’t the only people who sometimes need scaffolding.

Parents sometimes need different pathways to understanding information too.

And when we’re talking about something as complicated as artificial intelligence, I think training needs to be part of the rollout.

If parents don’t understand AI well enough to know which questions to ask, how can we call their silence consent?

Maybe parents should be learning about the technology before their children—or even better, alongside them.

Imagine a phased rollout where families and students receive short, digestible training explaining what AI is, what it isn’t, how the school intends to use it, what information it may access, what the risks are, what the rules are, and what parents should be watching for at home.

Now we’re not simply introducing AI into a classroom.

We’re building AI literacy into a community.

Schools sometimes mistake access to information for understanding. An email goes out, an announcement gets posted, and the communication box gets checked.

But what happened afterward?

Did families understand it? Did they have questions? Could they respond? Did anyone follow up?

Perhaps some of this is a question of time. Schools are already stretched thin, and personally contacting every family about every initiative isn’t realistic.

But I also think part of the problem is that we haven’t always designed a complete process for communication.

Send isn’t the end of communication.

There needs to be some way to close the loop.

That’s what equitable family engagement looks like to me in practice: families receive important information in a form they can access and understand, have a real opportunity to ask questions or disagree, and have a clear way to respond—and someone on the other side is actually listening.

Not every family will participate. Not every parent will respond.

Equity doesn’t mean forcing participation.

It means making sure the opportunity to participate wasn’t designed in a way that excluded someone before the conversation even began.

Here’s the Uncomfortable Part: I Actually Want AI in the Classroom

After everything I’ve said so far, this might sound contradictory.

I think AI belongs in every classroom.

I don’t want education running away from AI. I want education to learn how to use it.

There’s a way to invite AI into the classroom as an academic enhancement instead of allowing it to become a shortcut to answers, assignment completion, and independent thinking.

Imagine an AI system designed primarily to guide a student instead of answer for them.

Instead of immediately providing the answer, what if it asked:

What do you already know? Where are you stuck? Can we break the question into smaller pieces? Can you explain why you chose that answer? Would another example help?

What if it helped a student practice the skill before trying the assignment again?

That’s a very different relationship with AI.

That’s assisted learning.

And that’s what excites me.

What If AI Could Help Bring the Classroom Into the Future?

I’m excited by the possibility of bringing classrooms into the future instead of continuing to recreate the past.

For generations, many of the basic structures of education have remained recognizable: a teacher, groups of students, standardized schedules, curriculum, assignments, assessments, and limited time for one adult to meet many different learning needs.

AI gives us an opportunity to rethink parts of that structure.

Not replace teachers, but expand what teachers and students are able to do.

A teacher cannot sit beside every student simultaneously.

An appropriately designed AI support system could potentially provide additional practice, explanations, study supports, scaffolds, translation, or differentiated pathways while the teacher remains responsible for the learning environment.

That’s where I see enormous potential for equity.

AI could help make educational support more accessible across academic levels. It could help educators provide accommodations and differentiation more consistently. It could give students additional ways to access material when the first explanation doesn’t work for them.

And perhaps most importantly, it raises a possibility that deserves serious attention:

Could technology help reduce the educational opportunities determined by a child’s ZIP code?

A student attending a well-funded school and a student attending an under-resourced school should not have fundamentally different ceilings placed on what they’re able to learn.

AI alone won’t fix school funding, staffing shortages, broadband access, disability services, poverty, or every other structural inequity in education.

But thoughtfully designed technology could potentially make high-quality instructional support and learning resources more widely available.

That’s exciting to me.

But the Same Technology Can Widen the Gap

Everything I just described can work in the opposite direction too.

If one district carefully implements AI, trains teachers, educates families, establishes safeguards, provides reliable devices and connectivity, and teaches students AI literacy while another district simply gives students access to a chatbot and says, “Good luck,” we haven’t eliminated inequity.

We’ve digitized it.

If some students learn how to use AI to question, research, create, revise, and deepen their thinking while other students primarily learn how to use it to generate answers, the technology isn’t closing an opportunity gap.

It may be creating a new one.

That’s why AI crosses a line for me when it becomes unmonitored, unexplained, or unquestioned.

We need to learn—as educators, parents, students, communities, and systems—how to use AI to guide us without becoming dependent on something we don’t understand.

Without education around the technology, what could be an incredible tool can quickly become a hindrance.

Some Decisions Still Belong to Humans

Systemic order, process, and high-impact decisions about people should remain grounded in human judgment.

AI can identify patterns, organize information, make suggestions, and sometimes help us see something we might have missed.

But I don’t want an algorithm quietly deciding what a student is capable of becoming.

Decisions about placement, discipline, academic pathways, special education services, interventions, opportunities, or anything else that can significantly alter a child’s future need accountable human beings involved.

AI can inform judgment.

It should not replace responsibility.

The question isn’t simply whether schools should use AI. I think we’re past that question.

I want to know how we’re using it, where we’re using it, why we’re using it, what we’re allowing it to decide, and who was part of making those decisions.

If This Were My Child, I’d Have Questions

Let’s make this practical.

Imagine opening an email from your child’s district that says:

“Beginning next month, our district will introduce AI-powered learning tools.”

As a parent, I’m going to have questions.

Not necessarily because I oppose it. At this point, I’ve probably made it pretty clear that I actually think AI has a place in education.

But “We’re introducing AI” isn’t enough information for me.

Five Questions I’d Ask Before My Child Used AI at School

1. How exactly will AI be used in the classroom?

I want more than the name of the product.

Will students interact with it directly? Will teachers use it behind the scenes? Is it tutoring students? Helping them write? Providing feedback? Creating assignments? Monitoring progress?

Tell me what it’s actually going to do.

2. How will AI fit into the curriculum my child is already being taught?

I don’t want technology added simply because it’s new.

How does it connect to what students are already learning? Where does it enhance the curriculum rather than replace it? And how will teachers determine when students should use AI and when they need to do the thinking independently?

AI should support learning—not become the learning.

3. What level of access will my child have, and how is that access supposed to improve their education?

What can my child ask the system? What can’t they ask it? When can they use it? How will its use be monitored?

And what happens when the AI gives my child information that is inaccurate, inappropriate, harmful, or simply wrong?

I want to understand the safeguards before I understand the features.

4. What does this require from my family?

Will using the platform cost families anything?

Will students need particular devices, internet access, subscriptions, or other resources outside of school?

If so, what happens to the family that can’t afford them?

And will there be classes or training for students and parents who want to understand the technology better?

If you’re asking families to support responsible AI use at home, give us the tools to actually do that.

5. What if I don’t want my child using it?

Is there an opt-out process?

What happens academically if I opt out?

Will my child still have access to the same curriculum, opportunities, and support?

And will opting out put them at a disadvantage compared with students whose families consent?

Because choice isn’t really choice if saying no comes with an educational penalty.

None of these questions are meant to stop innovation.

They’re questions families should be able to ask before implementation instead of after something goes wrong.

If I Were Sitting Across From a Superintendent...

I’d have questions for them too.

The first wouldn’t even be about a particular product.

I’d want to know how likely they are to bring AI-infused platforms into their district’s curriculum and, more importantly, what they believe the future of AI in education actually looks like.

Their answers would tell me whether the district has an AI strategy—or is simply purchasing AI products.

There’s a difference.

Before We Buy Another Tool

Before purchasing another AI product, districts should understand both the benefits and the risks of introducing it into the classroom.

But I’d go further than that.

Don’t just evaluate the product.

Evaluate the problem you’re buying it to solve.

What does this tool do that teachers, students, or families actually need?

Does it replace something—or are we just adding another login?

How does it work with the technology teachers already have?

What evidence supports its educational value?

What training will implementation require?

What student information will it access?

How will the district know whether it is actually improving learning?

And what happens if it doesn’t?

Schools don’t need another shiny piece of technology. They need fewer disconnected tools that do more meaningful work.

Teachers Need Less Technology—and Better Technology

Teachers don’t need another application added to an already crowded list.

They need a reason to reduce the number of applications they’re using.

They need more time and quicker ways to identify what each student needs and respond to those needs. They need technology that removes repetitive work instead of creating another system they have to manage.

AI should be giving teachers some of their time back so they can spend more of it doing the part technology cannot replace:

Teaching children.

Students Deserve a Chance to Be Great

Students deserve access to current technology and relevant curriculum.

But more than that, they deserve the opportunity to grow according to their academic needs, abilities, interests, and potential—not simply according to the box a system has placed them in.

For years, education has talked about “No Child Left Behind.”

I want us to think bigger than that.

What if the goal isn’t simply making sure a child isn’t left behind?

What if we start with the expectation that every child can succeed and then design the system to help them get there?

AI could support that.

A student who needs another explanation could get one. A student who needs material scaffolded could receive it. A student ready to move beyond the current lesson shouldn’t necessarily have to wait for everyone else.

A multilingual learner could potentially access content through additional language supports. A student with accommodations could receive support without constantly having to announce that they need something different.

That’s the AI future I’m interested in.

Not AI doing children’s work for them.

AI helping more children access the conditions they need to do their own best work.

Families Deserve More Than Notifications

Families deserve reliable information about their children.

They deserve communication they can understand and follow-through when they respond.

When something affects their child’s education, they deserve a way to respond and know that response went somewhere.

That shouldn’t be an extra feature of education.

It should be part of how the system works.

Technology Companies Have a Responsibility Too

Technology companies have a responsibility to build for education rather than simply sell to education.

Children are not ordinary users.

Companies building for schools should protect student privacy and data, be transparent about what their AI can and cannot do, and create meaningful safeguards instead of expecting teachers to catch every problem after it happens.

They should think about multilingual learners, students with disabilities, different learning levels, and communities with different levels of technology access while they’re designing—not afterward.

Educators need meaningful control over how AI interacts with their students.

And companies should be willing to demonstrate that their products actually improve something that matters.

Putting “AI-powered” on a product doesn’t automatically make it innovative.

Selling something to a school doesn’t automatically make it educational.

And If a District Can’t Explain Why It’s Using AI...

If a district can’t clearly explain how an AI tool improves education, it isn’t ready to buy the tool yet.

Figure out the problem you’re trying to solve.

Talk to teachers, students, and families.

Determine what success would actually look like.

Train the people who will use it.

Establish safeguards.

Then find technology that supports that vision.

I don’t want schools preparing children for the future by buying whatever technology happens to arrive first.

I want schools to decide what kind of future they’re trying to create—and then choose technology capable of helping them build it.

This Is What I Mean by Equity By Design

This is what I mean when I talk about Equity By Design.

Equity cannot be something we check for after we’ve built the system. We have to ask who we’re designing around before we build it.

For me, that means recognizing that students and families aren’t all starting from the same place, and they aren’t all going to need the same things.

One family may need information translated. Another may need to hear it instead of reading it. Another may understand the language perfectly but need complicated educational or technical language explained more clearly.

One student may need scaffolding while another is ready to move ahead.

The goal shouldn’t be to give everyone exactly the same thing.

The goal should be to make sure everyone has a meaningful way to access what they need to move forward.

That’s why I think something could change if schools designed AI policies with students, teachers, and families instead of simply designing them for us.

We might get more family involvement, but I think we’d get something even more valuable.

We might build better systems.

Students could tell us how they’re actually using AI—not how adults assume they’re using it.

Teachers could tell us what helps in a classroom and what creates another burden.

Parents could tell us what they understand, what concerns them, what they need explained, and what happens when these technologies come home.

Administrators could bring the district-level concerns around implementation, cost, safety, accountability, and outcomes.

Different people see different parts of the problem.

Maybe bringing those perspectives together before we build the solution helps us stop solving one person’s problem by creating another person’s burden.

That’s what I want future education technology to do differently too—including anything I have a hand in building.

I don’t want technology that asks students, families, and educators to rearrange themselves around the software.

I want technology that rearranges itself around the people.

It should recognize that people learn differently, communicate differently, need different levels of support, and access information differently.

It should reduce the number of disconnected systems people have to navigate rather than adding another one.

It should help teachers identify and respond to student needs without trying to replace their professional judgment.

It should help families understand what’s happening with their children without requiring them to become experts in educational terminology.

It should give students support without doing the learning for them.

And accessibility, language, accommodations, safety, transparency, and family communication should be part of the design from the beginning—not features we remember to add later.

Because if we build something and then have to ask,

How do we make this equitable?

I think we’ve asked the question too late.

The question should have been: Who are we designing around?

So I’ll Leave You With This

I don’t think the question anymore is whether AI is coming to education.

It’s already here.

What matters now is what we’re going to do with it.

Will we use it to help students think, or allow it to think for them?

Will it give teachers more time with students, or become another platform they have to manage?

Will it make education more accessible, or create another divide between people who understand how to use it and people who don’t?

And will families be part of figuring this out, or will they hear about the decisions after they’ve already been made?

I don’t have all of those answers.

But I do know that I want us asking the questions before we build the systems our children will have to live inside.

So I’m curious:

If your child’s school started using AI tomorrow, what would you want to know?

And maybe the bigger question:

At what point would you expect the school to ask for your input?

Because if we’re designing the future of education, I think it’s worth asking who actually gets a seat at the table.
